Referrals and Tests
Surgery is considered a specialty practice. Therefore, we advise that you check with your insurance company to see if you need a referral to be seen by a surgeon. All referrals must come from your primary care physician. If one of our surgeons recommends that you see another physician related to a different aspect of your care, it is your responsibility to contact your insurance company to see if you need another referral to the third physician, or if the recommended referral physician participates in your insurance plan.
If you need a referral form completed to be seen by one of our surgeons, your primary care physician should complete it. If our surgeon refers you, our surgeon will complete a referral form for you. Our surgeons will correspond with your primary care physician and advise him or her of your current plan of care.
Referrals for Medical Tests
If necessary, our surgeons may arrange for you to have diagnostic tests. These may include, but are not limited to x-rays, CT scans, MRI's, laboratory tests, ultrasounds, and mammograms. If a test is recommended we advise you to check with your insurance company as to whether or not prior authorization is needed for the ordered test. If a referral is needed for testing, we can assist in getting this done for you.
We regret the inconvenience that comes with contacting your insurance company. However, many companies have strict policies related to tests, referrals and prior authorizations. If any of these items are out of place it may delay our progress with your care. If you need assistance with these items, please let us know
Referrals from physicians outside Mayo Clinic Health System
An appointment can easily be set up through our receptionist. Any information you can give the receptionist regarding the need for the appointment with a surgeon will be helpful. We would greatly appreciate if the referring physician could communicate patient information with the surgeon directly. If any lab work or imaging (x-rays) have been completed, it would be very helpful if we could get copies of results prior to the appointment with the surgeon. This will allow us to have all the information available to us at the time of the appointment and will enable us to provide a thorough, effective consultation.
