    Gynecological preventive exams

Preventive care is just as important as taking care of yourself when you're sick. A gynecological preventive exam is a great opportunity for you and your provider to review your health, discuss preventive health steps, conduct screenings and address questions you may have related to women's health.

During a gynecological preventive exam, you can expect:

    • Review of past medical, surgical, social and family history.
    • Review of preventive services and ordering of appropriate tests, including Pap smear; sexually transmitted disease screening; bone density test; cholesterol test; vaccinations; mammogram; vital signs assessment; and physical examination, including breast and pelvic exam, if needed.

Your OB-GYN may be able to address other health concerns during the visit if there is time. If there is not enough time, your provider may ask you to return for another visit or schedule an appointment with your primary care provider.

General health conditions, including high blood pressure, diabetes and asthma, are not typically addressed by OB-GYNs. Rather, your primary care provider should address these conditions.

Not all treatments, tests and services are available at all Mayo Clinic Health System locations. Check with your preferred location in advance.
