Procedures

Our pain medicine specialists offer a variety of procedures, including:

Basivertebral nerve ablation

This minimally invasive treatment can help relieve chronic lower back pain caused by intervertebral disc and vertebral endplate degeneration. This is an option after trying medications, physical therapy, weight control and other noninvasive therapies. The physician uses radiofrequency energy to destroy the nerve causing the pain, which stops pain signals from reaching your brain.

Intrathecal pump

During a minimally invasive procedure, a small pump is implanted. The pump continuously delivers medicine to the spine, blocking the nerve signals sent to your brain. It's an option for patients who experience muscle spasticity and cancer-related pain. This procedure requires general anesthesia, and the incision is closed with stitches or staples.

Minimally invasive lumbar decompression

This minimally invasive outpatient procedure can treat pain in your lower back, buttocks or legs caused by lumbar spinal stenosis. This pain is associated with standing and walking but is reduced when sitting. During the procedure, the physician removes pieces of bone and ligament through a tiny incision in your back to restore the space in the spinal canal and relieve the compression on the nerves. It often is an option for patients who are not candidates for a more extensive open surgical procedure but have a thickened ligament in the spinal canal that causes spinal stenosis. This procedure doesn't require general anesthesia or stitches.

Peripheral nerve stimulation

This nerve stimulation device can often help treat chronic pain involving a focused body area, which is not always associated with a nerve injury. The physician implants one or more small electrical wires next to peripheral nerves. These wires attach to an external stimulator. When pain relief is needed, patients use an external device to produce and send electrical pulses from the stimulator to the nerves.

Radiofrequency ablation

This minimally invasive outpatient procedure, sometimes called radiofrequency neurotomy, can treat various areas of pain, including neck, back, buttocks, knee and hip. The physician uses electrical energy to create a lesion on a specifically targeted nerve causing the pain, which blocks or interrupts the signals sent to your brain.

Spinal cord stimulation

This nerve stimulation device can help reduce chronic pain and reliance on medications. The physician implants stimulation wires and a small generator under the skin, similar to a pacemaker. The generator delivers mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord to reduce the pain signals that travel through the spinal cord to the brain.
