    Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is concerned with the restoration and maintenance of health. The goal of physical therapy is to assist the patient in living a more independent and/or more pain-free life.

Physical therapists are health care professionals who:

    • Evaluate and treat people with health problems resulting from injury or disease
    • Assess joint motion, muscle strength and endurance, ambulation, balance and performance of activities of daily living
    • Provide treatment including therapeutic exercise, modalities, training in activities of daily living and patient and family education

Physical therapy services are available at Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin and Adams clinics.

Physical therapists work closely with healthcare providers, who may refer a patient to therapy following surgery, neck and back injuries, stroke, immobilization by splints or casts, or injuries. After a thorough evaluation, the therapist and patient create an individualized treatment and exercise plan.

    Treatment is designed to:

    • Decrease pain
    • Increase strength, flexibility and range of motion
    • Prevent re-injury

Patients take an active role in their recovery by learning how to manage their symptoms and pain, and prevent re-injury. For additional information or to schedule a physical therapy appointment, call 507-434-1999.
