Conditions and consultations
Our dermatologists and specialists provide consultations for diseases of the skin, hair and nails, in addition to body fat removal.
Conditions we treat include:
- Acne. Acne is a term for plugged pores, pimples and deeper lumps, such as cysts, that occur on the upper half of the body. Acne affects teenagers, but adults also can be troubled. You can reduce scarring with acne treatment.
- Aging skin. As you age, your skin naturally becomes thinner, less elastic and more fragile. Factors like sun exposure and lifestyle habits can accelerate wrinkles, dryness and age spots.
- Athlete's foot. A fungal infection causes athlete's foot. Moisture, such as sweating, and tight shoes and socks make the perfect setting for a fungus to grow on your feet.
- Cold sores. The herpes simplex virus can cause blisters, called cold sores, almost anywhere on a the skin. The virus has two types. One tends to occur around the mouth and nose, and the other often appears on the buttocks and genitals.
- Eczema. Also known as atopic dermatitis, this condition makes skin red and itchy. It's common at any age.
- Hair loss. Hair loss can occur for many reasons, the most common of which is hereditary baldness. New medicines may help reduce baldness in some people.
- Hives. Another name for hives is "wheals." These pink swellings occur in groups on any part of the skin. Each wheal lasts a few hours before fading away, leaving no trace. Hives usually itch and may also sting or burn. Allergic reactions to foods, drugs and other allergic triggers can cause hives.
- Moles. Moles, a common type of skin growth, often are harmless. Rarely does a mole become cancerous.
- Nail problems. Problems with your fingernails or toenails could be a sign of a health problem. Consider seeing a dermatologist if your nails are thick, tough or painful or have scaling, white spots or red lines on them.
- Psoriasis. Psoriasis is a persistent skin disease in which the skin forms red, thick patches covered by silvery scales. Most often, psoriasis affects the scalp, elbows, knees and lower part of the back.
- Rashes. Often called dermatitis, rashes can become itchy or painful. Causes include allergic reactions, friction, prolonged exposure to heat and moisture, or contact with irritants, such as harsh chemicals. Hand eczema is a common rash. Many people with this problem start with dry, chapped hands that later become red, scaly and swollen.
- Rosacea. This common skin condition causes flushing or long-term redness on your face. Some symptoms may flare for weeks to months and then go away for a while.
- Skin cancer. This is an abnormal growth of skin cells. It's a common form of cancer that can develop on skin exposed to the sun as well as areas of your skin not ordinarily exposed to sunlight.
- Warts. A virus causes warts. The four most common kinds of wart are hand, plantar (foot), flat and genital warts. Warts usually are skin-colored and feel rough.

FAQ
What should I bring for my first appointment?
For your first appointment, bring your current prescription information or any medical records from non-Mayo Clinic Health System facilities. Complete a medical records release form to authorize the transfer of health records from another health care facility to us. Visit our Medical Record Forms page for this form and other forms in multiple languages.
How does Cryolipolysis (CoolSculpting) fat removal work?
The cryolipolysis procedure, also called CoolSculpt or CoolSculpting, is a non-invasive devise used to eliminate stubborn fat safely and effectively, without surgery or downtime. This fat-reduction treatment is the only FDA-cleared procedure to use controlled cooling to safely target and eliminate diet- and exercise-resistant fat. Its results are proven, noticeable and lasting, so you'll look and feel great from every angle.
Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues, and the technology can safely deliver precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), and then die. Your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they're gone for good.
