DAISY Award

The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. A Southeast Minnesota-based selection committee will select a nurse to receive The DAISY Award each quarter based on specific selection criteria. The award honors nurses with a certificate, statue, presentation and recognition that will follow them throughout their career.
How do I nominate a nurse for the DAISY Award?
You will simply share your experience or observation of extraordinary, compassionate care provided by a nurse:
Nominate a nurse for the DAISY Award.
Who is eligible?
Registered nurses (RN) and licensed practical nurses (LPN) who work or have worked at a Mayo Clinic Health System location in Southeast Minnesota are eligible for The DAISY Award.
What are the criteria?
Anyone who experiences or observes extraordinary compassionate care being provided by a nurse can share their story through nomination. There are no other criteria.
When reviewing each story, the selection committee may look at how the nurse:
- Recognized obvious and subtle needs of a patient or their family
- Used their unique skills, talents and concerns for other people
- Offered themselves to ease pain and offer hope in ways that were meaningful to a patient or their family
- Exemplified the kind of nurse that patients, families and staff recognize as an outstanding role model
- Mobilized resources from within themselves or through their peers and community to assist patients and families in times of need
Sample Nomination Story "Our 88-year-old mother was a patient for 2 weeks. Mom was on a roller coaster; we never knew what to expect. Everything was new and frightening to us as we watched her struggle to live. Through it all, Tami was there, working tirelessly, diligently, helping Mom and us understand issues and ramifications. She patiently explained things to us, sometimes more than once, until we got it. Of utmost importance to her was Mom's comfort. Tami was also concerned about each of us as we went through our own emotional and exhausting roller coaster rides. We looked forward each day to seeing Tami. She obviously cared deeply for Mom. Tami became like family. I wanted to hug her hello and goodbye. Everyday her knowledge and skills were evident. Such as, for 1 tiny example, the day her oxygen saturation was dropping, chest tubes were in-Tami analyzed the best position to put mom into with those tubes in order to maximize oxygen saturation. It worked. Tami's tireless, devoted, and skilled passion for our mother's well being made a huge impression on us. She stood out as a nurse willing and able to go beyond the normal call of duty." |
About the DAISY Award
The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of an auto-immune disease in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family by the hospital staff. When he died, they felt compelled to say "thank you" to nurses in a public way and established a recognition program, The DAISY Award For Extraordinary Nurses (The DAISY Award). Now, 4,800 health care facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 28 other countries honor nurses with The DAISY Award.
