    Optometry

    Diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and conditions. Includes regular annual eye exams, eyeglass prescriptions, and contact lens fitting and dispensing.

    Our contact lens department has a wide variety of lenses available:

    • Gas permeable lenses for single vision, astigmatism and multi focal.
    • Lenses for corneal refractive therapy (CRT).
    • Soft lenses for single vision, astigmatism and multi focal.
    • Sclera lenses for single vision, astigmatism and multi  focal.
    • Hybrid lenses for single vision, astigmatism and multi focal.

    All of these lenses also have abilities to correct cornea problems due to trauma or disease.

    Contact lens fun facts:

    • The first contact lens, developed in 1888, was glass blown.
    • The first plastic single vision, bifocal and trifocal lenses were patented in 1936.
    • The first corneal lens was released in 1950.
    • In 1970, the first soft lens was developed in Czechoslovakia and marketed by Bausch and Lomb.
    • The first hybrid lens was released in 1976.
    • The first CRT lens was approved by the FDA in 2002.

    Optometry is part of Eye Services, located on the 1st floor of the medical center.
