Your primary care team helps your child be healthy. This is where you go for yearly check-ups or when feeling sick or sad. We provide care for the whole person, mind and body, now includes services to address changes in behavior.
While your primary care provider helps your child with their overall physical and mental health. To ensure that your child is getting the best care, your provider may also connect you with a Behavioral Health Consultant (BHC).
A Behavioral Health Consultant can help your child and your family:
Create a healthy lifestyle by changing eating and exercise habits, or learning relaxation skills, ways to sleep better and have good friends.
Manage difficult behaviors, such as tantrums, noncompliance, or angry outbursts. The consultant can help your family make changes in what matters, at any age.
Communicate with your child’s school to develop behavior care plans, if needed.
Cope with stress, including worries, loss or sadness.
Improve self-care techniques to manage pain, diabetes, taking medications, learning how to swallow pills and other issues.
Your visit with the Behavioral Health Consultant will be approximately 15 to 30 minutes and will focus on a particular problem. After talking with you and your child or teen, the consultant will help you choose your next action steps, which may or may not include a referral for additional behavioral health services. Visits with a Behavioral Health Consultants are covered by most insurance plans.
