RED WING, Minn. — Beginning the week of Monday, Aug. 30, work will begin inside the Professional and Community Center ― the former location of St. John's Hospital ― at 1407 W. Fourth St. This work is being performed in preparation for the demolition of the building in early November.
The City of Red Wing and Mayo Clinic Health System, along with the demolition contractor, will work together to ensure the demolition is performed safely and with minimal disturbance to local residents.
"Mayo Clinic Health System will work to inform neighborhood residents in advance whenever possible of activities that would generate excessive noise or traffic in the area," says Beth Flattum, vice chair of administration, Southeast Minnesota Region, Mayo Clinic Health System. "All demolition activity is targeted to be complete by the end of 2021, with sidewalk and curb restoration activities beginning in early 2022."
"This location [Professional and Community Center] has a history of giving back in a time of need as a hospital, nonprofit center and COVID-19 testing site," says Becky Norton, president, Red Wing City Council. "Mayo Clinic Health System and the City of Red Wing will continue to work together to determine the best future use of the space while considering needs in the neighborhood and the Red Wing community at large."
The Professional and Community Center has been largely vacant since 2018. The City of Red Wing and Mayo Clinic Health System entered a partnership in 2020 to determine how the property could be repurposed or sold to potential buyers. No decision has yet been made as to what will be done with the property following demolition.
