La Crosse receives $1 million financial gift for new hospital
LA CROSSE, Wis. ― As construction begins on the new hospital in La Crosse, Mayo Clinic Health System announces a $1 million commitment for the new state-of-the-art facility.
The Harry L. Crisp II & Rosemary Berkel Crisp Foundation, located in Marion, Illinois, is making the financial gift in appreciation of Mr. Crisp's long-time care by his physician, Paul S. Mueller, M.D., who also is regional vice president for Mayo Clinic Health System in Southwest Wisconsin.
"My family and I have enjoyed the benefit of excellent health care from Mayo Clinic providers. And, in particular, my personal experience with Dr. Mueller has been exceptional," says Mr. Crisp. "When this important project arose under his leadership, it was a natural opportunity to support Mayo Clinic."'
Mr. Crisp, his late wife and their family have been long-time Mayo Clinic patients. The family's first gift to Mayo Clinic was a named endowment fund in support of cancer research, specifically in honor of Mrs. Crisp's physician and her own journey as a patient.
The "Harry L. Crisp II Waiting Room" will be located on the fifth floor of the new hospital in honor of the gift. This area will be designed for visitors and patients just outside the surgical suites.
"I am honored that Mr. Crisp has chosen to support this exciting project in recognition of the outstanding care that he has received from our teams over the years at Mayo Clinic," says Dr. Mueller, regional vice president, Mayo Clinic Health System, Southwest Wisconsin. "We look forward to continuing to provide outstanding service, and the safest and highest-quality care to our patients in the new facility."
The new hospital in La Crosse will foster a culture of excellence and equip staff with the latest tools to cure, connect and transform community health care. It will replace the current hospital building and connect to the Cancer and Surgery Building.
The new six-floor, 70-bed facility will include:
- A surgical and procedural floor adjacent to and integrated with the current operating rooms, housing pre-recovery and post-recovery rooms
- Endoscopy suites
- Cardiac catheterization labs and interventional radiology
- Medical-surgical units
- A flexible ICU and Progressive Care Unit
- A new Family Birth Center
- Shell space for future growth
Mr. Crisp is the owner of Pepsi MidAmerica of Marion, Illinois — a company started by his father in 1935 — which distributes Pepsi products in portions of Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee, with 11 depots in those states in addition to the headquarters and bottling plant in Marion. Pepsi MidAmerica has grown into one of the largest family-owned Pepsi bottlers in the U.S. The family business continues with the next generation of family members involved, and all have been extensively connected with and supportive of multiple local and regional projects and community service — an important tradition with the Crisp family.
"We have been blessed with the ability to give generously, so I hope others will be inspired to support this with the same enthusiasm we have. This project truly is an investment in the community and area served by this clinic and hospital," adds Mr. Crisp.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2024.
