    Childbirth education

    COVID-19 Notice

    Mayo Clinic Health System is temporarily pausing some in-person childbirth education classes and BirthPlace tours. This decision is in line with precautions advised by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to limit possible transmission of COVID-19.

    If a class noted below is not listed on the Classes & Events page, this offering is on pause. Check back again to see if availability has changed. We apologize for this inconvenience.

    Many classes are available virtually. Registration is required. You will receive a class link via email about one week before class. Call Mayo Clinic Health System at 651-267-5375 with questions.


    Childbirth Education

    A variety of classes are offered in Cannon Falls, Lake City and Red Wing. Search the Classes & Events page for local class dates, conference room locations and times.

    Registration is required. Class sizes are limited. Classes are free, unless noted.


    Class Cancellation

    Mayo reserves the right to cancel any class that does not meet minimum size requirements. Classes that reach maximum capacity will be closed. Classes may be canceled due to severe weather warnings or inclement weather.

    If classes are canceled, Mayo Clinic Health System will contact you. If you must cancel, please call at least three business days prior to your class so someone on the waitlist can attend in your place. Call the BirthPlace at 651-267-5375.


    Baby Cafe

    This group is for pregnant and breastfeeding moms. It is a great place for mothers to relax, share tips and techniques, address breastfeeding issues, and socialize with other moms experiencing similar situations. Get one-on-one help from specially trained health professionals, including professional lactation support.

    Offered in Cannon Falls and Lake City.


    Baby Care

    This class is recommended during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Topics include normal characteristics of the newborn, caring for baby, infant safety, family adjustments to the new baby, car seat safety, physical development and couplet care. Content is also provided during the "Saturday Labor" and "Birth" classes.

    Offered in Red Wing.


    Baby Nutrition

    This class is recommended to take in your second or third trimester of pregnancy. Topics include infant nutrition, such as feeding in the first year of life, breastfeeding and how the benefits of breastfeeding can affect your baby’s overall health.

    Beyond Birth

    This class is for after your baby is born. Parents and baby are welcomed back to the classroom for the new challenges of baby care and parenting. Educators and lactation consultants will answer parent questions and review topics such as baby care, growth and development, weight gain, lactation and feeding issues, and facing new challenges.

    Attend as many classes as desired. Siblings and family members are welcome. Registration is not required.

    Offered in Red Wing.


    BirthPlace Tour

    Tours of the BirthPlace in Red Wing are included with the "Labor and Birth" and "Siblings" classes. If you are not attending one of these classes, you can speak with your provider to schedule a visit after your next appointment.

    Childbirth Education — Self-Guided Online Instruction

    This interactive instruction covers essential labor and delivery information through videos and quizzes. Access information when, where and how you prefer.

    This class is ideal for families with time constraints, moms on bed rest or those who need a refresher. Get organized with tools, planning checklists and trackers. Preview the course.

    Once you purchase the online class, you will receive an email with login instructions. Allow four to six hours to complete the class. You will have access to the class for six months.

    Grandparents

    This class is designed to teach grandparents current concepts in prenatal and infant care, and how to best support new parents. Topics include changes in baby care and car seats.

    Offered in Red Wing.


    Labor and Birth

    This class, which is available as an evening or Saturday session, is recommended during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. Saturday sessions include "Baby Care" information. Topics include progression of labor into birth, birth stories, options for pain relief, comfort measures, positioning, and medication alternatives. This class includes a tour of the BirthPlace.

    Prenatal Breast Milk Collection — Gathering Colostrum Before Baby Arrives

    This education is for women at 36 weeks. Your provider will give you the supplies and education handouts. Lactation experts will call you to provide individual education.

    Topics will include expressing colostrum, benefits for you and your baby, process for collecting, techniques and resources for hand expression, and storing colostrum until your baby arrives.

    Siblings

    This class is designed to prepare children ages 2½–9 for their new sibling and mom's hospital stay. Children will tour the BirthPlace, see a newborn baby, watch a video and draw pictures for the new baby's hospital crib.

    Children should bring a doll or teddy bear to class to diaper. While the children watch a brief video, parents will meet with a childbirth educator to discuss the adjustment of siblings to a new baby.
